Today was a soaker. It rained all race but luckily it was warm. I woke up this morning to the sound of heavy rain and knew off the bat I would be racing in the rain. Isaiah the weatherman, who stopped for the night after coming back from Speed Week, said I'll be dry during the race. Well that didn't happen.
Yesterday, Jason called to see if I was going to the race. I said I would if he was and so we decided to go. However, this morning he bailed. It was pouring rain and I understood, but he said he didn't feel well. But he did give me gas money/entry fee since he was the reason I decided to go. It was a nice gesture. So if you ever bail on a ride, be nice and offer some gas money.
Surprise! Low turnout. It poured rain on the drive over, it poured rain while we registered and changed, and it poured rain at the start. The low turnout made us combine the 1/2/3 and 3 fields but I didn't mind, more places to hide. We were set to do 5 laps and 60 miles.
We got rolling and in the first lap several attacks went. Finally a group of three got away and I stayed away till the end. Wasn't a huge deal for me since only one guy from our field was in the move. In the 2nd lap, one guy had a spectacular crash on a downhill that sweeped to the left. From what I heard, he was too far in the gutter, and just ate it. I saw his bike tumble around and then he just popped right up. However, his bike wasn't so lucky. One guy who was close to the crash said he felt pieces of bike hit him.
I think one or two small groups got away toward the end but I was content with sitting in the field. It turned out all the 1/2/3's were in the main group except for the one guy off the front. Looking at the results, we shed most of them. It really became a race between Burns and O'Brien. O'Brien was basically glued to Burns' wheel the whole time. O'Brien is 1st overall and Burns 3rd, with 2nd place absent. They weren't really interested in anything but themselves so it worked to my advantage.
So after 2:30 of rather boring, wet racing, we came down to the field sprint. I really wasn't interested in getting involved so I stayed in the back. Rolled through for 14th overall but 4th in Cat 1/2/3.
Next weekend will be a good one. Race at the Lakes on Saturday, then going up to Michigan for Cone Azalia on Sunday
